Abstract

“Burning Man” is an annual festival focused on the self-exploration of one’s identity where participation is mandatory and perceptions of consumerism regulate engagement with market interactions (Helm et al. 2015; Kozinets 2002). All three genres of folklore exemplify the conflicted relationship between commonly Western attendees and consumption through titles determining commitment, alternative forms of commerce, rejections of materialism, and constructed art exhibits (St. John 2018; Helm et al. 2015; Kozinets 2002). Ultimately, becoming a space of transformation and negotiation where internal radical evolution takes precedence over committed anti-consumerism outside of the event (Austin and Fitzgerald 2018; Kozinets 2002).
